Transfers “Grind Session 101: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly”

The first thing I’m going to say before I even get into the details of the disc is that I don’t want anyone saying I’m bias because two of the group members are Omegas *smile*. I’ve had this CD for awhile and I’ve played it in my car day and night just so I can write an honest review. Okay, world, here we go…
Just to start, the Transfers consist of Stephen Williams aka S. Willie, James “Moe” Little aka Drumma Boi, and Jonathan Scott aka J. Scott.
We first heard of the Transfers when they were known as the Transfer Kidz and released their first single, “Gold Boots & Crown,” paying homage to Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Now anyone who was around me at that time knew that I played that song out in Phelps 182.
Then, we got “Diamonds & Pearls” featuring Quartrail Tucker, not to mention “It’s Alright”, “If You Don’t Want Her,” and “Be Wit Me,” on the group’s MySpace. If you liked all three of those than you will agree with me that the singles left you only hungry for more from the Transfers.
Well, now we got it, and its Grind Session 101: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly, the first full length album.

Sip. Mista, and J-Stylz, Ducati, Tetimus, Shellz”) along with The Elements, Thang’ My DoinThe album consists of 17 tracks with most of the production coming from Calvin Miller (“Grind Session,” “Kickers,” “Body Roll,” “Floss All Day,” “Get Em,” and the bonus “

Guest vocalists include Bonita Davis (“POParazzi Status,” “Don’t Give Up The Fight”) J-Stylz (“I’m A G”, “Running Around”) and Eli (“Lay Up Girl”).

Lyrically, J.Scott describes them best on the first track, “Grind Session 101,” when he says: “if you hear anything on this album that sounds intellectual probably came from S-Dot, anything gutter probably came from Drumma Boi, anything crazy and noise coming from me.”

At first listen it was the song, “Kickers” that made me realize what I liked individually about each member. Lyrically, they are all on it, but J. Scott stands out because I’ll be honest, you never know what he’s going to say lol. He especially caught my attention when he says: “Baby boy speakers so I call them things Jody/ My volume stay on high so I call my system Smokey”- Kickers). Next, it was S.Willie’s voice that got my attention. It’s deep, rough, and rugged, and when you pair it with a hard beat that has that gutta sound,, man its FIRE!!!! You don’t know how many times I hit rewind in the car just to repeat his verse on “Kickers,” especially when the breakdown comes in. Then, if you ask me, Drumma Boi is what you would get it if you’ve mixed the styles of J.Scott and S.Willie together. His rhymes are catchy, energetic, and at the same time got that laid back feel to them: “Forestville tatted/ My wheels black magic/ Paint Darth Vader/ You can call me Luke’s Daddy/ I’m pimpin’ all hoes/ cool like the Fonz/ 23s on it /they like damn that LeBron).

Another track that stands out is Get Em’. At first listen, when it opened, it reminded me a bit of Rihanna’s ”Unfaithful,” but then the beat kicked in, S. Willie started in on the hook, and the connection was over. This is my favorite song on the album point blank period.

*Some of my fav. lines on “Get Em” :
-”My uncle say Drumma betta not f*** around with bricks/ I said you’re the dope man, you can’t tell me s***/ I’m from the streets where they hustle hard and raise real n****s/ It might be a crack fiend or might be the dealer/ country city/ country town/ you know what it is/ and when they talkin’ about head bussing/ they talking ’bout the Ville- Drumma Boi

-”Money chase me, its the cop, and I’m the culprit/ and i always get caught/ charges never get fought/ lessons never get taught/ things always get bought…money get soft/ but you got to know the where and go/ and seek it fo’/ and me my time of the month/ period/ you end up bleeding/ and i ain’t talking ’bout no guns/ i never shot/ i never bought/ i barely even held one/ but i will whoop that a**/ if you’re reaching for my pockets and you going for my cash/ life’s a b**** so I barely tap her/ i graduated school to become a  rapper- J. Scott

Not to mention, I got a new slogan on life: “Hustle hard, grind slow, and let the money chase me”

Other highlights from the album that are sure to catch your attention is:

“POParazzi Status,” which is the most commercial and ready for radio song on the album, it definitely has that “pop” feel.

“Don’t Give Up The Fight” featuring Bonita, produced by Shellz

“Floss All Day”- a Calvin Miller banger!

“Lay Up Girl”- Produced by Tetimus. Check out the video:

“Body Roll”- another Calvin Miller banger!!!!!- Check out the video…

“Pour Me Another One”- produced by Mista Sip

What I like most about the album is that it is well-rounded. There’s a little something on there for everyone, you got your clubbangers (“Body Roll”), the songs for the ladies (“Lay Up Girl”), the songs where you just want to be riding in your car and being crunk for no reason at all (“Kickers”).

I’m going to put it like this, if you don’t like it, there’s something wrong with your ears….
