Honeymag.com interviews Trina!~

this interview is straight from honeymag.com:

Honey Magazine: This is your fifth album. Are you excited about the release of the new album Amazin’?
Trina: I’m very excited. I worked really hard on the album. I just wanted to make records that were relative to where my life is right now. It was about just having fun, and being happy, and love. Evolving as a woman. It’s been pretty amazing.

Is that why it’s called Amazin’?
Well, I was in the studio and it wasn’t really a name thing — I was just going back from the first album to the fourth album and I was saying, “Wow, really five albums?” It was like a rewind thing. I was just looking at a bunch of footage in the UK and all over the world. I just thought this is pretty amazing. It seems so surreal. As an artist sometimes you don’t realize how much you have done.

The lead single is “Million Dollar Girl.” How was it working with Diddy on that track?
I’m going to be so honest with you. Diddy has been my most favorite artist to work with. When I first heard that he wanted to get on the record, I just thought the label was just saying that to hurry up and press me to get the record done. I had Keri Hilson already in mind. When I got the beat I thought she’d kill it. She has such a beautiful, amazing voice. When Diddy did the record, […] he flew down for the video Super Bowl weekend, just his aura just his presence — it was so professional and humble. He brought great energy on set. He grabbed me one on one. We said a prayer and Ciroc was in the building. I was just amazed. The whole crew was. We were wondering [if] he [was] going to come all ego-ed out.

In the video for “Million Dollar Girl,” you two seemed very comfortable with each other. Did you vibe on set?
He’s a really great person. He’s a business person. I love that. Everything was in a professional manner. He was a perfectionist. He checked everything with the video and it was just like a beautiful thing to have someone of his caliber to be doing the song with. And for him to be there and give pointers and to say certain things, it just made a smooth day.

Million Dollar Girl” is a different kind of record for you. How have you evolved from the very first single with Trick Daddy to now?
I’m at a good place. Before when I stared, it was just a new face, a new girl. I did a record with Trick. It was very provocative. It was just getting on the record and talking trash, and then I started knowing more and growing more, learning different things about the business. A lot of times as an artist you don’t get to do what you want to do because the label wants to have so much control. This time I had a lot of control to step outside and do what I want to do.

How have you changed?
I’ve grown. I’m not the same chick from when I did Da Baddest Bitch album. There were records and beats that I turned down, because I felt like I did it and I’m just over it. I’m on a new page. I’m still Trina. I still did something grimy and the underground club, the up-tempo, the sexy, the love [songs]. This album has so much more of my thoughts and my character.

What’s your favorite song on the album?
I have a record with Monica. It’s called “I Want It All.” It’s the love hate side. It’s one of those moments where I was in a spaced-out mind frame. And I felt like any other woman would feel if you’re in a bad relationship. One of my most favorites is a record I did called “Capricorn.” It’s not really a rap record; it’s more poetic. I was just expressing what a Capricorn means to me. I’m a Sagittarius. I listened to the record. After I was like, “Wow, this is really a different side of me.”

Is this album more pop?
It’s some pop records on there. I did some stepping outside of the box. I wanted to do something different. It’s just to show a little diversity. To show that I can do different things as opposed to a single rap record.

We heard that you worked with Lady Gaga on the album. What was that like?
She actually co-wrote the “Let Them Girls Fight” record, featuring Kaleena of Dirty Money. A producer I used on my previous album — he produced “Here We Go” — I went back to him and told him I wanted something different. He said, “I got a record for you, and it’s co-written by Lady Gaga.” At this time I didn’t know who she was. She wasn’t the iconic superstar. So I [listened] and thought, “This is fun.” I Googled her. I was really amazed. I loved her work and I was like I want to try it. It’s different.

Have you met Gaga?
I haven’t. I think it would be amazing. I actually got to see half of one of her concerts but I had to fly out and do a concert the same night. Amazing.

You also worked with Nicki Minaj on the album?
Yes, Nicki Minaj is on the album with Lady Saw. It was just one of those records where I wanted a different girly vibe — girls from different places with different types of expression and sound. Nicki was new and it was like embracing a fresh face. Lady Saw is Jamaican. So that was a whole different flavor. I’ve done an all-girl record before but not like this.

People always say you and Nicki have beef. What was your response to her last line in “5 Star Chick” when she says ‘Ask Lil Wayne who the five-star bitch is’?
There is no drama. There has no reason to be no drama. I’ve never done anything to her and she’s never done anything to me. Drama comes from conflict of interest. I saw you in the street. You said something I didn’t like. That’s drama. The rest of that is erroneous information. As far as [Nicki Minaj’s] verse — I was on the record first. When I heard [Nicki’s lyrics], that’s how she feels. Wayne is the CEO of the label that she’s on and I guess that is her way of saying let him solidify to people that she’s a five-star chick. I did my verse being totally me who I am, just being me, and talking slick.

So is it safe to say that your verse on the “My Chick Bad (Remix)” is not targeted towards Nicki Minaj?
On the “My Chick Bad (Remix)”, I don’t see how [my verse] could be anything to anybody — Nicki or anybody. It was just a slick verse — me just talking about my relationship, really. It had nothing to do with a female. I don’t spend too much time worrying about females or just having another female on [my] mind. That’s just not how I roll. I’m focused on music, making money. And everything outside of that really don’t matter to me. It’s a waste of time.

How was first meeting Nicki Minaj?
I met her. She’s a fun person. She has a great spirit. We got along, no issues. And we keep it moving. We don’t got to sleep together. This is an industry. We just got to work together. We just got to get money and do our thing.

Is there anyone on your bad side right now?
I’ve been doing this for 10 years. I don’t get into all that. I had one incident, which I really wouldn’t call it anything. It was just having something to say to let people know that I smile a lot. I’m very humble. You can say I’m glammed up, whatever. I don’t walk around with a chip on my shoulder. I’m making money. It’s a good life for me.

As a femcee veteran ,do you have any advice for Nicki?
It’s a hard industry. People don’t understand how hard it is to be a female, a woman and be in this game amongst these wolves—these dudes that just dominate the game. It’s a hard game. Before it was Nicki Minaj, It was Trina, Trina, Trina. When she came about, it felt great to embrace somebody else. I’m a very confident woman. I have no problem giving props to other women when props is due.

Who are the top five Female emcees/ rappers?
I’m going to say Lil’ Kim. I’m going to say Remy [Ma] because I love Remy. I’ll say Da Brat, MC Lyte. I’ll say me.

There was some definite girl power going down on the “My Chick Bad (Remix)”. Did everybody get along behind the scenes?
We got along just fine. We had a great day. Luda[cris] was there like a big kid in a candy store with all these beautiful women. He didn’t know what to do. We had a whole all-star team. It wasn’t a long day. It was Super Bowl weekend. I was on the set, Diamond, Eve—we did our cameos together. And Nicki arrived and did a cameo with us for the remix part. That was just when we did the dancing scene. And that was it. It was fun. We all joked and smiled and handled our business. I haven’t had that much fun in a long, long time.

There has been a lot of talk about the line in the “My Check Bad (Remix) where you say he got the lips tattooed. What was that about?
No I say “so good make him wanna tattoo my lips on him”.

Right! Kenyon Martin actually talked about getting the lips tatted on his neck on a sports show. How did you get him to do that?
It was just one of those things that just happened. We were just chilling, having a great time and Kenyon was getting tattooed and he wanted my lips. So I basically kissed a piece of paper a bunch of different times and we chose one and it was done. In five minutes it was over. It was great. I couldn’t believe it. I was like are you really about to get that? And before I could get that little smile off my face — you know that blushing thing — it was done. It was all over. I was standing with the cheeks really big, smiling in awe and it was done. I think it was a beautiful thing and I love them.

Kenyon Martin on Trina’s lips

trans Thats Her Attitude: Trina

We love seeing you two together. Where did you meet?
We met three years ago at a foundation fundraiser. It was something for Alonzo Morning. It was just one of those things. We started talking and it just continued from that. He’s a great person.

A lot of the blogs are reporting that you two have broken up although you have not. How do you deal with rumors?
It’s really hard to be private and to keep a relationship in this industry. Just to find someone that is a great person and ya’ll get along, to me that’s a beautiful thing. Outside of work, you need love. You need compassion and someone who really supports and holds you down and loves you. And I’m a relationship kind of person. I’m a very girly girl. I just love to be loved.

So back to the lips on the neck. A tattoo is as serious as an engagement ring. So what’s next? Are you two planning to have babies, wedding?
[Laughs] I would love to have a family. I’m just going to say that. If it happens and God blesses me with that, I will be so grateful and so thankful because I love kids. I have nieces and nephews that I adore. I definitely would love to have a family. So we we’ll see.

Recently, explicit photos of you were leaked from your cell phone. What was it like to go through that while being in a relationship with Kenyon?
The good thing was to have someone that is supportive. And be there and understand. Like I just didn’t know if I wanted to come outside. I didn’t know how to feel. It was a down thing for me at first. I’m a very emotional person so at first I was just like “Oh my God, why would somebody do that.” Then I got so much support from people around me. I just, like, refused to let the devil steal away my joy. I continued to lift my head up and move forward.

What actually happened? How did someone get your phone?
The whole situation has been turned over to investigative [detectives]. It’s beyond just soliciting photos. It was actually extorting money. What happened was someone stole my phone from the BET awards, which was back in October. And I just would pray that [the personal photos] would never pop up. This was something that occurred five months later. I was absolutely devastated thinking that was just so horrible for someone to do.

There has been speculation that all the photos were not yours. Is that true?
A lot of the photos that were online — some of them were from my phone. Some of them were not in my phone. Some were from the Internet, I believe.

Besides the album you also have a lot of other projects in the works, a clothing line and a fragrance. Correct?
I merged with a [new company]. They have a little more creativity and style as far as what I like. I don’t feel it’s fair to put out something that you wouldn’t want to rock yourself, so I just want to make sure that I’m totally involved and feeling comfortable. Especially with denim with voluptuous and curvy women, you’re always looking for that perfect fit. I’m also launching a cosmetic line, which is glosses and eyelashes and a bunch of other pretty products. I’m really excited about that — just to actually be a part of making it. I see how the gloss is made. I pick the colors. It’s just fabulous. You can check it out on my website and pre-order the album, which is TheBaddestChick.com. And free gloss samples come with that. Outside of music, I’m actually re-launching my perfume again. I’m so excited because now I have a bigger company and a more fabulous [manufacturer]. I’m creating and building an empire.

We’ve also heard that you have a reality show in the works. Can you tell us about it?
I’m actually getting ready for a television show. I think it’s really great. It’s really different from music though. I’m just in the beginning stage right now. I can’t wait to get started. I can’t say [which network]. We are not supposed to say because of the clearances and I’m not supposed to blurt it out.

VIBE.com interviews Jermaine Dupri

global14.com

check out this interview, straight from vibe.com with the ATL producer

VIBE: How surprised were you when you beat out Irv Gotti in VIBE’s Greatest Hip Hop Producers of All-Time?
Jermaine Dupri:
In the beginning, I didn’t pay much attention to it. I go into all this stuff thinking that niggas don’t fuck with me [laughs]. So I went into the contest like, “Ain’t nobody paying no attention to me.” You have some people who say that I helped contribute to Jay-Z’s national success when I produced “Money Ain’t A Thing.” But I have been fortunate enough to make [history-making] records such as the Da Brat being the first solo female rapper to go platinum as well being the first person Jay-Z actually made a record with from the South. People in the South say it was the beginning of them actually knowing who Jay-Z was. It’s not like I just make beats. I make movements. I can even go back to Kriss Kross as being the first kid hip-hop group that we will remember. And 10 years later, I did it again with Bow Wow. Then I ushered in the snap music era with the Dem Franchise Boyz. Things changed when you heard these records.

Do you feel like you get enough respect as a producer in hardcore hip-hop circles?
No. I’ll always get the “Oh, he’s not DJ Premier
.” I can’t even get into that conversation. If I see my name with Premier, I’m already thinking I’m going to lose [laughs]. In our world, if you are super commercial going against someone who is super hip hop, a different card is played. And I expect that. I was surprised that I even beat Irv Gotti [in the VIBE Producer Tournament]. Then me and Timbaland were going head up. I just knew I was going to be out of this one fast. And I know the Dr. Dre conversations are out of the question [laughs].

You seem unusually self-effacing about all of this.
Well, I’ve gotten past the whole, “JD doesn’t get the respect he deserves” thing. If niggas don’t pay attention to what I’ve done and how long I’ve been doing it, they will someday. But it’s kind of weird because Billboard named Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together,” which I produced, as Song Of The Decade this year. That’s an accomplishment that no other producer had on the charts. But then Billboard names the Neptunes producers of the year? The accolades don’t even go with each other anymore. That’s why I never get my hopes up. I’m just happy to still be in the game.

There was some talk that you were going to executive produce Usher’s latest album Raymond v. Raymond. Why didn’t it happen?
Well, I didn’t really want to be executive producer of Usher’s projects after Confession. Me as a producer, it’s kind of hard for me to go back into people’s projects when I gave you your biggest album ever…you sold more records than any other artist in this decade based on that album and now I have to ask you am I the executive producer of your next album? That seems disrespectful to me. Obviously, I’m looking at something different than everyone is looking at it whether it’s the label, the artist, management… whoever it is. I’ve had this same conversation with L.A. Reid, because I’m doing Mariah Carey’s album right now. And on her last album, I didn’t have one song on there. But I did Emancipation of Mimi and she sold more records than she sold in the last five years. What part of the game makes y’all not call me? But I’m not going to keep sticking my neck out. But I don’t feel like I’m supposed to ask to produce anymore. People are supposed to come to me and tell me that I’m the executive producer. That’s why I get more kicks working with younger artists.

Were you disappointed when the Def Jam-distributed TAG label, a place you envisioned where young artists would be able to get a shot, collapsed?
It just came down to me leaving Def Jam. It was a brilliant deal, but there were too many people trying to take the money and do different things with it. There were a lot of things happening that caused it to not go the way it was supposed to. I was invested in breaking new talent. But the label wasn’t really invested in breaking new talent. For most labels, they find it hard to break new acts. So they get a company like TAG, but spend the money on artists that’s already there. It became a tug of war situation. I’m sad that it didn’t work out.

Will you be involved in Janet Jackson’s next project?
I can tell you that she’s not working on an album. We just did the one song (“Nothing”) for the Why Did I Get Married Too soundtrack, which was released off of So So Def. Last time I heard she really didn’t want to do an album. She wanted to just do singles every once in a while. She’s looked at the marketplace—albums are not really doing what they usually do when you put all this budget out there. Janet is just trying to figure out her landscape. But the crazy part is “Nothing” is the biggest format record that I’ve ever had. It’s playing on seven different formats: gospel, AC, urban AC, urban mainstream, jazz and top 40 and rhythmic. I never had a record on a jazz station. I’m out here in LA and the biggest jazz station out here, The Wave, you know, that station when you go to hotels and you don’t know what station the radio in your room is on? This record is on that station [laughs].

How is Janet holding up?
She’s cool. She has a lot of work going on that’s keeping her in the right direction. The movie came out, which is the biggest Tyler Perry movie he has had thus far. It looks like her star power as an actress is still there. And she’s about to do the other movie (For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf) with Mariah, Kerry Washington, Whoopi Goldberg and few others. They will be shooting that in June. And then she’s performing at the Essence Festival, so she’s rehearsing for that every day.

You recently re-launched your So So Def label as an independent imprint. One of those younger artists that you mentioned is pop R&B vocalist Dondria, who you discovered on Youtube.
Right now, Dondria is my main focus. I had her for two years going back to when I was at Def Jam. When I discover a new artist, I try to figure out their niche. And while Dondria and Whitney Houston are so far apart from each other in terms of their careers, Dondria wants to be what Whitney became. I believe that that lane is opening up. Dondria doesn’t want to be Mary J. Blige. She wants to sing that big record. It took me a while to realize it and then I went into the studio one night and wrote “You’re The One.” This is my first new artist and single I’ve put out for So So Def independent. It’s a top 10 record right now and it’s a top 10 ringtone. The video even made no. 5 on 106 And Park. I’m excited to see it all happen. I’m really promoting her grassroots and making sure that everyone understands what she is about. She came to me with two million people watching her on YouTube. I had to connect both worlds.

How much of an adjustment has it been going independent?
It feels incredible. But it also makes me question what I was doing in my career before I went independent. Because now I’m really working. Niggas see me living the life and playing around. But to do this independent thing and to have it work, my life is completely different than it ever was. I’m doing everything. I do the blogging shit for real…I don’t have anyone writing it for me; I write up my own press releases so that people can get the right information about my artists. I shoot all these videos that you see on YouTube. And then I wake up every morning and do all the paper work. I’m spending my own money and talking to people I never used to talk to. It actually feels good.

Wow, sounds like a real 9 to 5…
[Laughs] I’m really working. At 16-17 years-old dealing with Columbia Records, I thought I would be doing what I’m doing now. I was working, but it was nothing like this. I rarely get two hours of sleep now. But it’s all worth it. To have Tyler Perry, a person of his caliber trust my instincts to put his soundtrack on So So Def. And then for a legend like Janet to do the same thing? I dreamed of having So So def becoming the Motown of my generation. If I can keep on doing what I’m doing, I believe that’s what I’m going to get to. I’ve proved to myself that I could put out records without the majors.

VIBE: Bangladesh goes in on Lil’ Wayne

vibe.com

peep this article, straight from VIBE.com where producer Bangladesh goes in on Lil’ Wayne:

Lil Wayne may be locked in Rikers Island away from the industry, but that’s not stopping some of his associates from handling business with him. Grammy award-winning producer, Shondrae “Bangladesh” Crawford has a bone to pick with Mr. Dwayne Carter. A $500,000 bone.

“I don’t fuck with [Lil Wayne]… and you can print that,” Bangladesh told VIBE, when asked if fans should anticipate a reunion come his 2011 release. “Cash Money don’t pay royalties. The Carter III, [is] his biggest album probably because of “A Millie.” [But] you have to sue these guys so that they pay up.”

The Atlanta beatmaker disclosed that he is suing for an estimated 500 Gs in owed royalty checks for his work on “A Millie,” one of Wayne’s most revered records of all time. A single that earned him Best Rap Solo Performance at the 2009 Grammy’s and gave The Carter III ammunition to sell a million records it’s first week of release in June 2008.

“It’s [Wayne and Baby’s] responsibility to pay [me] because all the money from album sales goes to Cash Money. I get checks from Sony for Beyoncé, checks from different labels for different artists, it just comes to you. You don’t have to call them, sue them and all that junk. This is what you’re owed.”

icedotcom.blogspot.com

He continues, “I don’t really give a fuck about [Wayne]. I can’t give a fuck about somebody that don’t give a fuck about my situation, I have kids. In the hood, people get killed for ten dollars. I couldn’t imagine owing someone hundreds of thousands of dollars and just walking around in front of them. I’m so confident in myself, that I don’t need Lil Wayne. There’s gonna be so many opportunities. I can create a Lil Wayne.”

A nominee for VIBE’s Best Producer of All-Time, Bangladesh went on to explain the corrupted process of Cash Money, centering on Baby.

“This is why Manny Fresh don’t fuck with [Cash Money] because he never got any royalty money. That’s why Baby can go around flaunting this cash, because that’s everyone else’s money… It’s not even Wayne’s fault. Wayne is not getting money. He is given money, he’s not getting money. If Baby gets a million dollars he’ll buy Wayne a Phantom, but that’s in Cash Money’s name. That 14-bedroom mansion isn’t Wayne shit,” he says. “That’s why he have his own company, because he was trying to leave Cash Money and the only thing that would keep him there was [if they] gave him his own thing. But Baby still controls that. All those Young Money artists don’t even know that they not getting royalty money.”

And the beat goes on. According to the New York Post, fellow Carter III producer, Jim Jonsin—responsible for Wayne’s infectious lead single, “Lollipop”—filed a $500,000 lawsuit against Wayne on April 20 for missing royalty payments. In May 2009, Dallas production duo Play-n-Skillz also mentioned to a local radio station that they were yet to reap any monetary benefits from their work on Wayne’s third single featuring, T-Pain, “Got Money.”

Bangladesh, who secured his placement on The Carter III when his friend and Young Money artist, Shanell suggested the “A Milli” beat to Wayne, recalls the first time he met self-proclaimed Best Rapper Alive. “Wayne is a different guy. I first stepped to him years ago. Don’t know if he was on drugs, but he ignored me,” Bang says. “This was before ‘A Milli.’ I didn’t sweat it because I told myself that one day, I aint gotta say nothing, he’s gonna like the music.” The premonition came to life indeed. However, it’s been almost two years since “A Milli” made it’s game-changing impact and Bang says the New Orleans MC has still never uttered a ‘Thank you’ his way.

“This industry is a devilish game. And these are devils controlling the game,” says Bangladesh who swears by self-rule. “I don’t wanna be caught up in it. I don’t wanna break bred with devils.”

A rep for Lil Wayne did not respond to a request for comment. — Tracy Garraud

So now that I’ve talked a bit about the origin of the story, I bet you’re wondering how it came to be 10 books. To start, I already knew that there was going to be a sequel. When I started writing the sequel, I was like, you know what, I love these characters so much that I can honestly write about them forever. Now that I’ve started working on book 10, I know for sure that I can’t write about them forever because now I don’t want to, lol. There are a few other ideas that I want to explore. Although 7 and 6 are my favorite numbers (and 7 is a sign of completion), I thought that 10 would be a good number to end the series at. I felt that I could explore different topics with the same characters instead of writing a whole new book with a new character, new setting, etc. Therefore I came up with the idea of The Diamond Collection, a series of ten books and each book title would have the word diamond in it.

However, I didn’t want to go the whole Nancy Drew, Sherlock Holmes, or Seinfeld route. In the novels and TV show, you don’t have to read the 1st book to read the 5th or watch the 1st episode to know what’s going to happen. You can pick up wherever. Well, with my books, you have to read the 1st before the 2nd and so on. Otherwise, you will be LOST. My series has been described to me as a soap opera and to be honest, it is. Hopefully, the drama of it all will catch you like I am intending it to!

Research, Research, Research

When I first started writing the 1st book and people asked what it was about, I would say drug dealers. I didn’t have the plot already figured out yet so I gave a simple answer for what was a simple plot at the time. One of the first reactions that I got was, how in the world are you going to write about drug dealers? First off, I don’t believe that I have to be a drug dealer just to tell the story of one. Of course, a story is told better if you have some sort of experience with it because you have firsthand knowledge, but anyone can tell a story. There is tons of material, people and info in the world to help you tell a story and make it believable.

For one, I’ve always had this weird fascination with Al Capone. I remember seeing a picture and a brief article about him in The Source and I was like, this man is amazing! Yeah, I know, Al Capone wasn’t a good guy, but to me, he represented three 3 megas in leading a criminal enterprise: MONEY, POWER, and RESPECT.

Then, one of the guys I work with (shoutout to Kirk) gave me a book to read on Pablo Escobar (I had already written about half of the Collection by this time) and I was like…I don’t know what it is about gangsters and drug dealers, but I love reading about them! Although we know how Pablo’s life ended, it was still amazing to me to read about his beginnings, his rise, and then of course, his fall.

Research for the book wasn’t hard at all. It didn’t become hard until I took the novel to a REAL location which is in Book 7. That was when I found myself constantly having to look stuff up. Other than that, no. I don’t know…maybe I already had a good idea of the game from the people I did hang around :-0)

Finding The Passion

One night while working on book 10, I stared at my list of goals for 2009. I had only completed 1 goal that year and that was to get my copyright certificate for Diamonds in the Rough. I sat there and was like, “When am I ever going to have the $ to self-publish this book/series?” Working at New Hope is not going to cut it. Some how, I ended up looking at different publishing companies. I first looked at publishamerica.com, but dismissed the idea. Somehow (and I couldn’t remember how), I stumbled upon Passionate Writers Publishing. My first though was…”How am I ever going to know if what I have is good if I don’t let a professional look at it?” Of course, I’ve emailed my novel to about 3 or more friends and they loved it, but what about the professional people who knows if something is going to sell? I figured I would submit it and the answer was either going to be yay or nay. So, I spent about 30 minutes writing the synopsis and submitted the first 3 chapters. About two hours later, I received an email from the publishing director who requested the full manuscript. YIPPEEE!!!!! Although it wasn’t a contract, it was a sign that the director wanted more. I submitted the manuscript and then on Monday, I received an email that they loved it! From then on, it felt like everything moved so FAST…..
