What I Read: In Times of Trouble by Yolonda Tonette Sanders

4470805A novel where broken relationships are mended.

Before even opening the beginning pages of In Times of Trouble by Yolonda Tonette Sanders, one can read the novel’s tagline and receive a peek into the novel’s storyline. The tagline, which reads, “Life always brings forth difficulties…It is how you react, which dictates the outcome,” accurately summarizes the novel which focuses on a multitude of familial matters.

At the start of the novel, we are introduced to divorcee, Lisa Hampton, mother to Chanelle, and the main female lead of the book. While you are unsure of what to make of Lisa at first, throughout the course of the novel, as secrets are revealed, you start to understand and sympathize with her character more and more. To further explain, she can first be viewed as a woman focused on materialism and status versus a person’s true character. As the story plays out, we soon learn that Lisa is a former First Lady whose life became rocked by juicy scandal forcing her out her marriage and to the state of Ohio.

While the details of the scandal are not mentioned until much later, we do see firsthand the strained relationship between Lisa and Chanelle. This relationship is the main basis of the novel. Chanelle is a fairly good student who does make one or two mistakes as a result of her transition into a young lady. I found Chanelle to be quite mature for her age and she handled situations much calmer than I would have expected. While I would love to go into detail regarding these “situations,” I want this review to remain spoiler-free. Throughout the novel you will see how their relationship changes as they endure several unforeseen obstacles, which will definitely keep the reader on their toes!

Upon reading the novel, I discovered that almost each character in the book is plagued by a painful memory in their past. Whether it is a failed marriage, death of a spouse, domestic violence, addiction, illness, adultery, etc.; each character is holding onto a memory that is affecting their everyday life. These issues helped frame the book’s theme of forgiveness.

A perfect blend of comedy, romance, and drama, this novel also teaches that a person’s financial status is not a direct reflection of their heart. An entertaining and encouraging read; the author did an excellent job creating this story. I recommend this book to anyone who loves Christian Fiction or adult contemporary novels.

Being Mary Jane: Me, Myself, and I, NOT We, Our, & Us

being-mary-jane-screening-nyc-bet-3This blog post came to be after reading a comment left on Gabrielle Union’s Instagram page (gabunion) regarding her new movie/ show, Being Mary Jane.

The comment read:

Unfortunate depiction of any black woman—not our story, we will continue to reject these negative images and redefine what it means to be a beautiful, black, EMPOWERED, woman. Not whatever this character attempts to show. Carry on…

Sometimes, the words, our, we, and us, are not always the best words to use. Why? Well, because our, we, and us should not be used in an opinion. Your opinion is your opinion, not ours, not we, and definitely not us. Being Mary Jane is not supposed to represent THE black woman, but A black woman.  Out of all the millions of black women in the world, one movie or show is not supposed to teach the rest of the world what being a black woman is. It only shows what some black women are going through.

Being Mary Jane may not be your story, but it is someone else’s.  The images portrayed in Being Mary Jane were not always about the glamorous side of life (although Mary Jane did have a nice house and wardrobe!) or the happy times. The images portrayed were about real issues that some black women are going through, not all. Some black women can relate to this show because they have and are experiencing these emotions, they have lived through these situations of being the caretaker for their family, unknowingly the other woman, trying to have a voice in their career and so on.

While I have not been in all the situations depicted in the movie, I have been in enough to know that there are some elements of the movie/show which in my opinion, depicts this black woman (as in me, myself, and I).  I am proud of the movie and it will stay saved on my DVR until I manually erase it (which will probably be never). I also look forward to the series.

Carry On…

What Is This Chick Doing?

Well, well, well, I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted on my blog so I decided to drop a little note about what I have been up to. Well, I’m currently working on the book cover for Black Diamonds. I had announced plans to release a sneak preview of the book in June, which is still my plan as soon as I am able to come up with a cover concept I like. It’s one of the things I keep working on until I get the “feeling,” that the cover is indeed done. So why it may appear that I’ve gone ghost, I really am seriously sitting behind a laptop, browsing Istock and playing around in Photoshop. Hopefully, I can come up with something soon because I’m anxious to get feedback on what I have cooking for your favorite residents of Brookstone. In addition, I still have book signings coming up. Until the sneak preview is available, Razzle Dazzle.

What I Read: The Climax by Sharee Beasley

51O89+P5OYLSince becoming a self-published author I’ve visited many forums to interact with other writers for advice and to discuss concerns regarding the publishing industry. In one of these forums, I stumbled upon The Climax by Sharee Beasley, who was offering a free promotion of her book. Her debut novel, I wasn’t sure what to expect aside from erotica and maybe a dose of romance. Well, I ended up getting a whole lot more.

The Climax tells the story of a fiery redhead by the name of Lauren who starts a new job and a sexual relationship with her boss, Robert Freeman. Although they try to keep their escapades a secret, it’s obvious people in the office are suspicious of their relationship. It is also hard for them to hide the sexual tension. To add on to the drama, in walks Jin, a lawyer who Lauren starts sleeping with as well. At this point, Lauren is most definitely doing the most. Sex flings are constant, which can lead the reader to believe that the climax of the book would be a scene where Freeman and Jin find out about each other. While this does eventually occur, the book takes a totally different direction than I imagined.

In a scenario such as this, it would be only expected for another woman to come in and shake things up. This part of the plot puts you on the edge of your seat because you want to know what is coming. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned!

Overall, the plot and storyline of the book will draw readers in, however the editing of the book may make them stop reading. I’ve read tons of books with errors, but if it is minimal (one to three every now and then); I could care less, and would never mention it in a review. With this book, there were so many errors; the review wouldn’t be honest if I didn’t mention it. I did my best to overlook the errors and read to the end. I was able to follow along and still enjoyed the book.

Please keep in mind these errors could have been corrected since my initial download. Therefore, I would not advise for anyone not to purchase the book based off this review without checking out the Look Inside feature provided on Amazon.

In the end, the overall storyline and the major twist at the end made me grant this book four stars. I would definitely recommend this book to others especially if you like steamy sex scenes!
