Where is Behind the Book?

So just in case you don’t follow me on Twitter, I wanted to drop a little note and say that the newest blog post of the series has not been posted because of technical issues. My laptop is experiencing a, “booting error,” and the nice gentleman at The Geek Squad suggested that I get a new one since my laptop is over 6 years old and runs using XP. Hopefully, if it is the Lord’s will, I will have one tomorrow. I did try and see if I could post the blog at work, but since my site is ran through WordPress, it is blocked. Oh what joy! As soon as I am up and running, the blog post will be as well. SN: I am typing this message on my Blackberry. *Razzle Dazzle*

Behind the Book: Brookstone University

One of the first locations introduced in The Diamond Collection is the fictional Brookstone University. Located in East Brookstone, New York, the school is one of the primary settings in Diamonds in the Rough. Carmen, Tiara, Monifah, and Rakim are all attendees although none of them will graduate with degrees from the school for various reasons.

Kinard Hall

The university is heavily modeled after my alma mater, Winthrop University (Rock Hill, SC). This is only natural since I wrote the first two books while in attendance (I attended Winthrop from August of 2003 to December of 2007). There are only two differences between the two. The first difference is that one school is fictional and the other is not. The second difference is that Winthrop is located in a small city while Brookstone University is located in a large city. In terms of the structure of Brookstone University, I did not describe the buildings or the campus. If I had of, the buildings would’ve been very similar to those on Winthrop’s campus. For example, Gardner Hall (which is mentioned at the very beginning of the novel- it is the place where Carmen meets Tiara before they head to the diner) represents Kinard Hall. There is also a nameless auditorium where Carmen meets Tiara to discuss the possibility of her being intimate with Jay. This building could very well be Byrnes Auditorium.

The French Toy Poodle, official mascot of Sigma Gamma Rho

As for similarities, both universities have the presence of Greek Life. This part of the story came from the fact that I joined Sigma Gamma Rho in 2005 and wanted to incorporate Greekdom into my novel. In the book, Carmen’s mother, Patricia Davenport, is a member of Delta Sigma Theta and Rakim is looking to pledge the fictional Theta Beta Psi Fraternity.

When the book first came out in 2010, I got the question of why Carmen’s mother was a Delta. Well, the honest answer is that I felt that if she was a Sigma Gamma Rho, it would be expected. I decided to go against the grain and make her a Delta. I also knew that if I ever wanted to create conflict between Carmen and her mother, one of the causes could be that Carmen became an honorary woman of Sigma against her mother’s wishes. This would only contribute to the strife that will already have formed between the two.

Next, the decision to create a fictional brotherhood for Rakim came during the editing process of Diamonds in the Rough. Originally, Rakim was pledging Omega Psi Phi. There is also a scene in the book where Carmen goes to Rakim’s house, sees his line brothers there, and they discuss brief details of his pledge process. I didn’t want to attribute hazing, an illegal activity, to any organization that was a part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) so I decided to create a fictional organization. By using Theta Beta Psi, the image of NPHC and Omega Psi Phi remained protected.

Since I am on the subject of Greek Life, I thought it would be only fair to disclose that the original version of The Ace of Diamonds focused on Carmen’s daughter, Kristian, pledging a fictional sorority, Lambda Pi Omega. Whether or not, I will keep this same story, but introduce it with new characters and as a book that is not part of the Diamond Collection is up in the air. For right now, it shall remain in my vault of unfinished works.

But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land. And I’m happy, tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man. The Vogue Archive: “Clown”

So I was listening to some of Frank Ocean’s music on YouTube and I thought about how it felt to write a brutally honest song. I haven’t done it in a while, but I remembered a song I wrote in college, which I felt fit into the category of being brutally honest. I’m not speaking in terms of bashing someone, but in terms of  putting your honest feelings out there without embellishment. Here’s mine, its called “Clown.”

You see the pain never leaves

It just quietly hides

And no one understands

Why you’re afraid to go outside

When you enter into a world

And find a love that’s all new

And it becomes your world

The only thing that loves you

But then its taken away

All of a suddenly

No proper explanation

You were left alone to breathe

And you got an attitude

You’re so confused

Everything’s fell down

But you paint on a smile and become a clown

You see the rain is there

It’s coming out the cloud

You feel it everywhere

But you really don’t know how

And every inch of your body

Flinches in pain

And your eyes won’t stop crying

You just hear songs that say…

He was taken away

All of a suddenly

No proper explanation

I was left alone to breathe

And I got an attitude

I’m so confused

Everything’s fell down

So I paint on a smile and become a clown

~|~ RIP Slim Dunkin

This is straight from rollingstone.com:

The rapper Slim Dunkin was fatally shot at an Atlanta recording studio on Friday evening.

According to Atlanta police, Slim Dunkin was shot once in the chest with a handgun last night around 5:30 p.m. The rapper, whose real name is Mario Hamilton, was preparing to record a video in the studio when an argument broke out.

“Before the video shoot took place, it appears the victim and suspect got involved in a verbal altercation,” Atlanta Police Maj. Keith Meadows told the Associated Press. “We don’t know what that altercation was about.”

The police have not yet identified the shooter or recovered the handgun. They say that between 13 and 20 people were in the studio at the time.

“Right now we’re just trying to . . . identify who may have seen what, really just trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together,” Meadows told the AP. “It seems everybody witnessed something very different. We’re just trying to go back and make sense of everything.”

The rapper was taken to Memorial Grady Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Slim Dunkin was considered to be a rising star in Waka Flocka Flame’s Brick Squad Monopoly. He was featured on several tracks by Waka Flocka Flame, including “Fuck the Club Up” and had recently released a 20-song mixtape featuring Gucci Mane, Roscoe Dash, and Pastor Troy. Atlanta police say that Slim Dunkin was in his early twenties.

Muchas Gracias

Yesterday at work, I tried to get my co-workers in the Thanksgiving spirit by suggesting that we all go around the room and say what we’re thankful for. Not saying that they aren’t in the “Thanksgiving spirit,” but they found the idea to be rather- corny, lol. Well, here’s a few of the things that I’m thankful for and feel free to comment with some of your own.

  • God- knowing that someone loves me unconditionally despite my mistakes
  • Health- It’s a blessing that everyday I can wake up, put one foot in front of the other, go to work, and pay my bills
  • Family
  • Friends

Wanted This, Ate That!

Pasta e Fagioli

Every time I visit Yahoo! it seems that there is an always an article from Eat This! Not That! Some of the food items that are posted are ridiculous! You’d be surprised to find out how many dishes at your fave restaurants have as much as calories as your recommended daily intake!

I decided to do this blog post after visiting Olive Garden’s website. I went with a friend to the restaurant on Sunday but decided to check out the nutrition facts before I settled on a dish. I decided to show the difference in cals if I had of ordered exactly what I wanted and what I actually ended up eating:

What I Wanted:

2 breadsticks- 3oo cals

Chicken and Gnocchi soup-250cals

Braised beef and tortelloni (lunch portion) 740 cals

Total cals: 1290 cals- OUCH!

Seafood Brodetto

What I ate:

2 breadsticks- 300 cals

Pasta e Fagioli soup- 130 cals

Seafood Brodetto-480 cals- this is actually one of the Garden Fare options.

Total cals: 910 cals

*By the way, although I don’t recommend it, because of the amount of cals I ate for lunch, I didn’t eat dinner. My total daily intake for the day was 1555 cals which includes breakfast, snacks, and my daily vitamin. I probably could’ve ate only 1 breadstick which would’ve brought the amount of cals to 760, but I’m still fighting through my weakness with bread!

Update on The Diamond Collection

It has been almost a year since my last book release and I have gotten numerous messages regarding the third book. The Ace of Diamonds is complete and has been submitted to my publisher. I am waiting to see if it has been accepted or not. So, let’s keep our fingers cross! In terms of Black Diamonds, which is Book Four, I am halfway finished with the re-write. A big thank you to everyone who has supported me! *Razzle~Dazzle*

Food Whore Alert: Shrimp Alfredo Pasta

Since I live by myself, I don’t feel the need to cook every night. I like to cook things that spread that I can take for lunch at work for more than 1 day and still possibly eat for dinner. Let’s be real, you waste money not eating leftovers. So since I’m trying to branch out and try different things, I’ve been trying new recipes. I recently found a recipe for Chicken Alfredo Pasta. It would be very costly if I cooked the pasta according to the recipe, so I created a quick and easy way to go about it. I also decided to use shrimp instead of chicken. Here’s what you’ll need:

1 box of pasta- you can use pretty much any kind of pasta noodles that you like. I’d prefer to use Garden Rotini, but elbow macaroni or even spaghetti noodles can work

1 jar of Alfredo sauce

1 bag of frozen mixed vegetables

1 bag of cooked/peeled shrimp

First, cook your pasta according to the directions on the box. You can cook your mixed vegetables at this time as well. Once the pasta is cooked, drain off the excess water. Return the pasta to the pot that you cooked it in, add the mixed vegetables, shrimp and finally the alfredo sauce. Stir and season with pepper.

Food Whore Alert: Toad in the Hole Bake recipe

So, I’m always looking for a hot breakfast idea (and I really mean hot). I don’t really dig cold breakfasts unless I’m on a budget and have no choice, but to eat a cup of yogurt, a banana and a protein bar. My fave breakfast is grits and scrambled salmon (I lie, its actually a stack of hot pancakes from IHOP, LOL). Well, I’ve gotten into trying new things and found this recipe on kraftrecipes.com. Check it out. FYI: I altered it a little bit to fit 1 serving size. Also, remember your egg will be “sunny side up.”

What You Will Need:

2 slices of bread
1/2 Tbsp.  margarine, softened
1/3 cup KRAFT 2% Milk Shredded Cheddar Cheese, divided
1   egg
1 slice of OSCAR MAYER Bacon, cooked, crumbled

*To be honest,  I omitted some of the ingredients for calorie purposes. Of course, the taste won’t be the same, but I cut out the bacon and the cheese. I used Sara Lee 100%Whole Wheat bread and a Sunny Meadow egg, which made this breakfast sandwich come to a total of 235cals and 13g of protein. It was still good minus the bacon and cheese, but one dayI will add the extra ingredients to get the full taste!

PREHEAT oven to 400°F. Cut hole in center 1 of the bread slices, using 1-1/2-inch cookie cutter or rim of drinking glass. Discard removed bread circles or reserve for another use.

SPREAD remaining bread slice with margarine. Place, margarine-sides down, in 13×9-inch baking dish; sprinkle with half of the cheese. Top with cut-out bread slices to make 1 sandwich. Break 1 egg into the hole. Sprinkle with remaining cheese and the bacon.

BAKE 15 to 20 min. or until cheese is melted and eggs are set.

Food Whore Alert: Broccoli Quiche

Want to try something? Try this recipe I found on sparkpeople.com:

Instead of putting the mixture into a pan, I put it into 2 pie shells.

1 cup egg substitute- I used liquid egg whites
1/4 cup fat free half and half
1/4 cup skim milk
3 oz low fat swiss cheese
1 large stalk broccoli- I used a bag of Great Value frozen broccoli
1/2 cup canned mushrooms

Preheat oven to 400*F.

Mix broccoli, mushrooms, egg substitute with half and half and skim milk.

Pour into 2 pie shells and sprinkle with cheese.

Bake in 400*F oven for 40 mins.

Food Whore Alert: Saffron Indian Cuisine Restaurant and Bar

Well, its been awhile since I’ve blogged, but I wanted to share my cultural experience with you! On Friday, I visited Saffron Indian Cuisine and Bar, located on Ayrsley Town Blvd in Charlotte, NC (for more information, visit saffron-cuisine.com). It was my first time eating there and the experience was delightful! The waiters/waitresses were not overbearing, but they always checked up on me and asked what I thought about everything since it was my first time visiting. Great service! Here’s what I ordered and I would highly recommend it for your first visit:

Tandoori Chicken 11.95

Juicy spring chicken marinated in flavorful, mild, freshly ground spices, and roasted in the tandoori. Served with sautéed lemon and onions.

This isn’t spicy at all, the chicken has great flavor, which is even better on the sautéed onions!

Gulab Jamun 4.95

A succulent treat from North India made from a special dough, fired golden brown and served in a sugared syrup.

This dessert is so sweet, I found myself eating the syrup! Sidenote: There was much more in the bowl than what I’m showing…I took a few nibbles before taking the pic, lol!

The Author Project promotes Unloved on Conversations Radio!~

What is the Author Project?

Seven authors (Jo Davis, HD Hatcher, Omegia Keeys, Autumn Prince, Lisa Rusczyk, KJ Thompson, and Vogue) have joined forces to send one message. That message is, “You are not Unloved!” Unloved is an anthology dedicated to those who have been the victim of bullying, or know someone who has been bullied.

What is Unloved?

Bullying was once considered a harmless rite of passage. Some were either bullied in school or they were the bully. What was once considered an acceptable practice has now been drawn into the limelight by the national attention of highly publicized suicides due to bullying.

Bullying can take on different forms. Bullying is not just a physical act but can also be an emotional, written, or verbal act as well. Bullying can take place in the workplace, school, online, and even while we are traveling in our vehicles on the road. Bullying is a form of abuse that has reached epidemic proportions in the United States and civilized nations across the globe.

When bullying goes too far, the end result is sometimes suicide. Suicide should never become an option. One life lost to this senseless way, is one too many!

All proceeds from Unloved will go to charities in support of Bully Prevention and/or Suicide Prevention.

You can purchase this book from http://www.passionatewriterpublishing.com or amazon.com!

Hey! What’s going on?

So I’ve been getting this question a lot…Hey! What’s going on with the third book? Well, let’s say this. I completed the third book last year sometime in the fall, but decided to change a lot of things in it. There were characters introduced that weren’t vital to the entire collection that I decided to cut thus somewhat changing the plot of the novel. There were also things set to happen in the fourth book (Black Diamonds) that I decided to let happen in the 3rd book. My goal is to have it finished by the end of March. Will that happen? I hope so- keep your fingers crossed.

Check me out on WordSexy Radio- 02.14!

Like a Kid in a Candy Store

So at my second job in CLT, we (me + some of my co-workers) decided to be Secret Santas. I LOVED my gifts so much that I just had to share them! I love PURPLE so I was absolutely overjoyed when I opened my box/bag and found a purple scarf, purple bracelets and a purple wallet! I knew that the gifts could only get better after I saw these items! It did! My last gift I received was Mariah Carey’s Christmas CD (Merry Christmas II You) and her Luscious Pink perfume! Yippeee! I was jumping around like a kid in a candy store!
