SMH: Effed Up Parents Equal Effed Up Kids

vibe.com

Yeah, I know the title of this post is harsh and you know what, it doesn’t have to be that way. Effed up parents don’t always equal effed up kids, but in some situations, it does. Then again, you can come from a perfectly stable household and still end up effed up. I guess its all in the way that life pulls you. So I was on honeymag.com and I saw this post about this man attempting to trade his three month old baby for two forty-ounce beers. So who was he going to give her to? The maintenance man that works at the gas station where he was trying to get the beer. What the Freak? Okay, okay, so let’s say that he was successful in the trade, what kind of life do you think this child would grow up having? I can only imagine.

Thankfully, the maintenance man had some sense and called the police.

Wait, wait, how about this? The mother of the child was in the gas station when all of this was going on! I bet she’s furious to know that her baby’s father was trying to trade their child! The man, whose name is Matthew Brace, was not arrested, but has to go to court over a charge of reckless endangerment of a child. The mother, who is probably shocked as all get out, is not facing any charges.

FYI: Lil’ Kim has nothing to do with this post, but her facial expression is matching mine right now.

Misa Hylton talks to Honeymag.com….

honeymag.com

this article is straight from honeymag.com:

I was born to a Japanese-Jamaican mom and a Black father, whose family is from South Carolina. I’m proud to say I was born and raised in Mount Vernon, NY. It’s home to Denzel Washington, Dick Clark, Al B. Sure, Case and, of course, Sean “Diddy” Combs. It’s crazy because Mount Vernon is only four square miles and most of us went to the same high school, Mount Vernon High School. Sean lived around the corner from my best friend Tiffany, so as kids’ we’d see each other from time to time. Years later, we ran into each other at the Apollo in Harlem. That’s how our relationship began. I was there with him during those early years when he interned at Universal and was then promoted to A&R. I was also there when he got fired and was starting Bad Boy. I was about 19-years old and about three months pregnant at the time, and he was scared out of his mind. I understood his fears, being fired and having a baby on the way. But I told him, listen you have what it takes you can do this on your own. I also encouraged him to sign legendary rapper,  Biggie Smalls. He wasn’t going to do it at first, but just like Sean, I’m good at recognizing talent, and I could see it in Biggie. I loved his sound. I loved his swag. I thought it was amazing, and eventually Sean saw it too. Through it all, I was his girlfriend, but in a lot of ways I was like his assistant, too. I’d be there for him if he needed someone to find clothes for an artist or run down to 8th Street in Manhattan to pick something up. I was interning at Def Jam in Artist Development as well and had the opportunity to work with Jodeci because of Sean.

That’s more or less how I got my start.

Balancing our relationship, work and motherhood had its challenges. It was a big adjustment. I still remember the day when the responsibility of being a teen mother sank in for me: it was Easter and all my friends were going to the club. My mom was away, my nanny was off and I couldn’t get anybody to watch my newborn, so Justin and I just sat on the couch watching TV and I kept thinking “Wow. My life has changed. I can no longer do what I want to do.” But even if I couldn’t party like I wanted, I wouldn’t give up work. Fashion styling is what I do. It’s my God-given talent. This is one of the easiest and most fulfilling things for me to do besides being a mom. Eventually Puff and I separated. Being a single mom had its difficulties, but I made up my mind never to get back together romantically. There was too much damage done.

But work was something else. I kept working with him on projects and it might seem strange, but I never let my emotions play a part in my decision for business. I was always able to separate the two. Even if we had personal problem, I’d never say,  ‘Oh you can’t take Justin!.’  A lot of women do that. When they have problems with the relationship, they’ll try to hold the kid hostage. I never did that. If he called me for a job and I was available, I did it. My philosophy was simple:  I’m not going to turn down a job that’s paying me, helping my career and making me happy out of spite. I’ll do it, but I’m not going to go to dinner after.

That work ethic has taken me far. By the time I was 25 years old, I can honestly say that I’d made a million dollars from fashion styling outside of my relationship with Sean. A lot of people think because I have a baby by Sean Combs, that I’m just sitting back and doing nothing, but that wasn’t the case at all. I was a guest on national talk shows. I had been featured in major magazines, and had worked with icons in the industry. And all with no publicist. I’m very proud of my success. To be clear, Sean introduced me to many of my celebrity clients, and I’ll always honor that. But everything I have comes from God and that’s my provider.

Now that I’m in a position to give back, I do so freely. I had no mentors and that’s why I mentor. Coming up as a stylist, it was actually hard for me to borrow clothes from fashion houses. Although the artists I worked with were celebrities in my world, they wouldn’t be able to get clothes loaned to them. But through every challenge lies an opportunity and I was inspired to start designing clothes because of that. If I couldn’t get a dress or leather hip huggers from designers like Gucci, I just made a better one. I worked with Troy and Guy, the couturiers behind 5000 New Flavors, a company that actually manufactured a lot of clothes for the early Bad Boy artists.  During that period, I worked with celebs like Mary J. Blige for her What’s The 411 album. I also worked with Lil’ Kim early in her career and that was a milestone for me because I got to work with Vogue and a lot of international magazines. I was part of her crossing over to MTV and the mainstream because of the “Crush on You” video I styled. Ultimately, I think I’ve been able to succeed because I strive to understand the artists in order to create a look that’s an extension of their personal style.

In recent  years, I’ve moved on from individual clients to corporate clients. I’ve worked with Club Monaco, Bill Gates and Microsoft as a Fashion Technology consultant, giving opinions. I’m also a costume designer and have styled several films including Perfect Holiday and The Cookout. What I’m most passionate about right now is a new project that deals with my other passion: hair. I’ve teamed up with celebrity stylist XX to start  a hairline called Bella Coif and the Transformers Hair show, showcasing our custom lacefront wigs and quality weaves. As I move on, I reflect and it’s cool to see it all come full circle now. Rihanna’s stylist Mariel Haenn used to work with me. She was my assistant fashion editor at The Source and Nicki Minaj’s stylist, Fatima, is working very hard and is keeping up with the fast pace of Minaj’s career. The fact that Minaj has been described as a modern Lil Kim makes me feel so good, because I was a big part of creating Kim’s image.

Besides work, I have a man — a great, fabulous, sexy black man I’m in love with. He’s not a celebrity. We’ve been together for about five years now. I appreciate that he’s a real man. That’s refreshing. Being in the entertainment industry you see that a lot of times men are so far removed from manhood and what it really means.  My guy takes care of me, takes care of my children and even opens my door for me to this day. It’s a good feeling to fall back and let someone take control. That’s a lesson I never thought I would learn, but then again, nothing has turned out like I thought it would, from life to love to motherhood to career. Everything I’ve experienced whether it made me happy or was challenging, has made me who I am today, and I love who I am today.

How do they even make hamburger cakes?

So Jermaine Dupri posted this picture of his daughter, Shaniah’s 12th b-day cake…its a hamburger, which I think is totally cool, but how do they do this…well, I did some investigating!

global14.com

this is straight from coolest-birthday-cakes.com:

This hamburger cake was for my son’s 3rd birthday. We got the idea while looking for drum cake instructions. I loved the look of the ones I saw so I decided to make it my own.

I used a white cake mix and round pans that are about 5 inches in diameter. I filled them about 2/3 full for the top and bottom bun pieces. I then used the last bit of batter for the meat.

I found a recipe for peanut butter icing for the buns. I utilized the hump in the cakes for the rounded look of the bun (I still have not figured out how to not have the hump!) This turned out to be perfect for the color. I iced the bottom bun first and set it on the plate.

I then iced the meat with chocolate icing cause what goes better with peanut butter? After carefully placing this on the bottom bun I started to ice the top bun and ended up with white icing drops for the sesame seeds. Of course every hamburger needs ketchup mustard and lettuce. So I tinted some plain icing with red green and yellow to my liking. I used a Ziploc bag with a small corner snipped off for the ketchup and mustard. This was smaller than any of my icing tips. I then used the leaf tip for the lettuce.

Everyone at the party was surprised by this hamburger cake.   —Sarah H, Brandon, MS

The Journey to Diamonds (Part III)

Secret, Secret, Secrets….

When I first received the notification that the manuscript had got accepted, I was scared to tell anyone. I probably held the secret for about two weeks before I even said anything. For one, it was still surreal to me. To have worked on something for so long and to see your dream come true in a matter of days was….indescribable almost. The thing is…I didn’t want to jinx myself. I didn’t want to run around yapping about it and the dream never come true. I guess my thinking is from reading so many stories about rappers/singers who sign a contract with a label, but are dropped before even a single is released.  So, what got me to talk?

Well, an erotic fiction author by the name of Omegia Keeys. She has two books published through Passionate Writers Publishing, Passionate Playmates and Seduction.com with another one on the way- Can You Keep a Secret? which drops today (May 18th). Through our conversations on Authors Supporting Authors (Ning.com), she highly encouraged that I let the cat out the bag, which I did. The first person I told was my best friend Alisha who has followed The Diamond Collection from day one. Then, I announced it at the CWC Reunion. After that, I made a little flyer that had a picture of diamonds on it that read “Who is Carmen Davenport?” Although no one ever commented on the photo on Facebook or MySpace, when I saw people, I did get questions about it. It was then that I broke the news that I was starting the journey of becoming a published author. Slowly, but surely, the word started spreading…let’s hope it spreads more!

Learning the Biz

The minute you tell someone that you have a book on the way, there are about three questions that are generally asked. 1. What is it about? 2. When is it coming out? 3. How did you get it published? Then, after these questions are out of the way, you get hit with the book cover question. This is the time when I am going to say this. It is highly important that you learn about any business before you join it. Of course, you can learn through trial and error, but it is important to know as much as possible. The reason I say this is because I’m learning as I go along. Thankfully, there are websites like AbsoluteWrite, which is a forum that helps as well as networking sites like Facebook and MySpace. There are tons of authors out there who are all sharing in similar experiences.  Here are some of the things I’ve learned so far…

Learn the actual company. I will be honest and say that I did not go beyond the official website in terms of getting information about the company I’m with before I signed the contract. However, I’m giving this tip because there is another company I had thought to go with, but found out later on, it wouldn’t have been a good choice. So I won’t get sued for slander, I won’t say their name publicly, but feel free to send me an email and I’ll give you my caution sticker! LOL…I can only imagine the pain I probably would’ve been in if I had of signed with them…BAH HUMBUG!

Next, make sure you know what you’re signing. You can even have the contract looked at by a lawyer before you sign it. The one thing you don’t want is to be stuck in an unhappy place. If you can’t, there are plentyof websites out there that will explain everything in detail. Use your resources!

Also, if you don’t know something (and there were tons of things I didn’t know), there is nothing wrong with asking questions. That way, when you get to book 2, you’ll have a greater knowledge of the ins and outs.

In terms of cover design, it is at the publisher’s discretion for most companies (probably even all). I got my warning going in after reading a blog post by Nikki Turner on her site (www.nikkiturner.com). Check it out:

Three days ago I received the first hot-off-the-press copy of the second Nikki Turner Presents full length novel: Against the Grain by FREEZE,

After exchanging pleasantries with the mailman and opening the package, I was unexpectedly impressed with the packaging of the book. Especially after FREEZE had given me HELL about the cover! He absolutely HATED IT. And to his defense, I can’t say that I loved it either at first! But again—to my surprise—the retailers said they loved the cover and were actually excited about putting our product on their block. Let me be the first say that we (Freeze and I) were both kinda, sorta wrong. Seriously, at the end of the day it’s the retailers that have the final say about what they choose to put on their shelves and what never sees the light of day, and it would have been border-line criminal if Freeze’s debut novel wasn’t as conveniently accessible to our loyal readers as possible.

On another note, I can’t explain some of the squabbles, skirmishes, and damn right almost resulting to blows not to mention the arguments a writer sometimes goes through to get the cover they really want, or even half way like on their work. I’ve fought so many times to get a hot cover on my babies that it’s not even funny anymore. However I will say I saw the first draft of the Ghetto Superstar cover today and I love it! Don’t worry – I will show it to you once they give me the green light that the cover is a lock.

Finally, the last thing I want to share is this. No one is going to be as passionate about your book as you are. If you want your dream to happen, you have to put the work in to make it happen. Another thing I’ve learned, don’t take anything personal in this industry. It is a business like all others with one common goal- make MONEY.

stay tuned for part IV…

Swizz Beatz + Mashonda: Back to Court…

I’ll be honest- the divorce between producer, Swizz Beatz and Mashonda had me SMH with my mouth wide open at the same time. Not only did Alicia Keys become accused of being a homewrecker- but then Twitter became the place for Mashonda to voice her concerns to Miss Keys. Well, although the divorce is final, word is that Mashonda is sending Swizz back to court because he’s supposedly 334,000 late in payments. According to the article on nypost.com, the breakdown in payments is this: 325,000 stacks in equitable distribution and 9,000 in alimony and child support. However, Swizz says those figures are inaccurate and that he is going “above and beyond” to provide for Mashonda and their son. He also stated that he gave Mashonda 700,000 big ones up front. DAYUMMS!

Well, they are supposed to be headed back to court over the whole matter next month…we’ll see how this pans out.

A little bit of HONESTY…

i am so behind on so many tasks that if I blog today…it won’t be posted until late tonight! I’m off for 3 days straight and have tons to do! I am praying hard that I can finish The Ace of Diamonds…keep your fingers crossed for me! Of course, I still have to edit the book once its done, but if I can actually finish writing it…I will be happy! I got 7 chapters to go!

Razzle~ Dazzle

  • There is talk about Terrence Howard playing Marvin Gaye in an upcoming biopic. I don’t see the resemblance, but did Diana Ross look like Billie Holiday?

According to essence.com, she’s planning on suing the movie’s producers if she does not get a look at the script. OUCH! I could’ve sworn that producers got the clearance for this kind of thing before signing people on to make a movie…oh well…you live & you learn.

HOT ISH: Jaesyn Shades…

So I was browsing thelifefiles.com and saw these shades….I had to share this! Now, I’ll be honest, I wouldn’t wear these shades a day in my life unless I was doing a video or a photoshoot. I promise you, you would not catch me in these walking down the block, but they would be hot in a music video!
