So my roommate started singing this song and asked if I knew it. I knew it sounded familiar, but I didn’t recall Carly Simon singing it because the first time I heard it, Jennifer Lopez was singing it on her This Is Me…Then album. Check out the two versions.
7 Day Challenge (Day Four): Wednesday, June 3, 2015
On My Soapbox
So to help me get closer to 1200 calories, when me and my temporary roommate went to Jack in the Box, I bought the Sourdough Grilled Chicken Club sandwich, didn’t eat the bread or the bacon (pork is considered as a red meat, which is against the challenge), but only ate the grilled chicken, lettuce, and tomato. I also once again finished all of my water, another gallon down!
Food, Food, Food
Breakfast
1 packet of Kiggins Instant Oatmeal- Raise & Spice with 1 tbsp of light margarine, 2 turkey patties, and 1 banana
Calories:400
Snack
6 oz of Nonfat Banana Creme Pie Yogurt with 1/2 cup of Post Honey Ohs cereal
Calories: 135
Lunch
4 oz of boneless skinless chicken breast, 1/2 cup of sliced carrots, and 1/2 cup of collard greens
Calories: 160
Snack
I planned on eating an orange as my snack, but my orange was rotten! Eewww!
Dinner
1 chicken drumstick, 1/2 cup of whole kernel corn, 1/2 cup of collard greens
Calories:260
Misc
Jack in the Box Sourdough Grilled Chicken Club
Calories: The sandwich is originally 540 calories but since I removed the bread and bacon, I’m not sure how many calories that is. So I basically divided the total calories in half and assumed that without the bread and bacon, it could be 270. It could be way less, but I really have no way of really knowing.
Exercise
I was only able to walk 1 mile at work before it started drizzling in 19 minutes. I went over my usual time by 2 minutes. I also spent 11 minutes freestyle dancing around my room.
Total Calories: 1223
Behind the Book (The Ace of Diamonds): Chapters Twenty-Six and Twenty-Seven
Chapter Twenty-Six
1. Once she had reached the police department, she ran inside, dropping her Hermès Birkin bag onto the counter. – Sometimes I have to remember when I’m writing that Carmen is rich. Therefore the items she wears, carries, etc. have to have a certain price tag as well.
2. Believe me, Harris; you have a better chance at fuckin’ me than getting me to be an informant.” – This quote by Carmen was intentionally put in this scene to show how feisty and nasty she can get when someone she loves is being threatened. She says this to Lt. Harris after he reveals that the Brookstone PD is working once again to take down Jay.
Chapter Twenty-Seven
1. Once Carmen had gotten everything squared away with Malachi, she called Kane to schedule a late lunch at Old Town Bistro.- There was actually a restaurant called Old Town Bistro in Rock Hill, SC, when I was writing this book. It has since closed down. I used the name of the restaurant only because I liked the way it sounded. The set-up that I visualize for the book is totally different from what the restaurant looked like in Rock Hill.
2. “Whoever catches Jay first will get the most money out the pot.” – Years ago, a guy friend of mine gave me a book on Pablo Escobar called Killing Pablo. In the book, it spoke of how different government agencies were in a race to get Pablo first. I used this same scenario for this situation with Jay. If two agencies were trying to get Jay, in this fictional world, it would be the DEA and the Triad.
3. The first place he took her was to the desk of a man who was drawing out the shape of a ring. He let her watch him for a few seconds before he brought her over to a young woman who was sawing off a piece of carving wax. – I watched a YouTube video on how to make a diamond ring and I incorporated information from the video into this scene for the book.
4. “Linx,” he replied, looking out the window. – This line is from the scene in which Carmen meets Linx, one of Jay’s new workers for the first time after being attacked by Blu’s men. The idea for this character came solely from the rapper Cuban Link. I’m a big fan of his song, “Flowers for the Dead.” I knew Jay’s new men on his team would be of Hispanic descent and I wanted them to be stocky. I remembered the rapper and felt he looked similar to what I wanted so I decided to name the character Link. Then to jazz it up a little, I took off the k and added the x.
7 Day Challenge (Day Three): Tuesday, June 2, 2015
On My Soapbox
Well, according to MyFitnessPal, getting slightly over 1000 is good enough. I completed my entry for yesterday and it didn’t give me a message that I wasn’t eating enough calories. I didn’t do that much better today. Only clocked in at 1012 calories.

Behind the Book (The Ace of Diamonds): Chapter Twenty-Four and Chapter Twenty-Five
Chapter Twenty-Four
I didn’t want to skip this chapter, but after reading it, there wasn’t anything in it to really dissect. Therefore I’ll be moving right along to Chapter Twenty-Five….
Chapter Twenty-Five
1. Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them. – This is a scripture, which comes from Matthew 7:12. Blu passes this message to Carmen in a note while she is eating with Malachi, her middle son.
Behind the Book (The Ace of Diamonds): Chapter Twenty-Three
1. “It has Jay’s stamp on it. Isn’t that the best news to come back to?” – The stamp idea in regards to Jay’s drugs came from the movie American Gangster. In the movie, Frank Lucas, Denzel Washington’s character stamped his bags of heroin with the word Blue Magic.
2. I paid thirty dollars to some crackhead for that information. – This line was inspired from a scene in The Wire in which one of the Baltimore detectives paid an addict money to get information. Of course, the detective knew the addict would use the money for drugs.
3. “You’re Carmen, right? Carmen Davenport,” he questioned. “You got quite a company here. You’re pulling in some major cake. My name is Shawn,” he said, extending his hand, “Shawn Blumington. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” – Once again, I wanted to show how close Blu could get. This time, he shows up at Flame and even makes it to Carmen’s floor.
4. He opened it and pulled out a pink Cobra pistol. – I saw the rapper Diamond in a picture holding a pink pistol and I figured if Carmen was going to get a gun, it might as well be pink, too.
Behind the Book (The Ace of Diamonds): Chapter Twenty-Two
1. Clad in a strapless black mini-dress, she made him forget all about Blu or King’s question. The dress fitted her to the T, but it was a number that Jay wished was for his eyes only. – Anytime Carmen has to wear something slightly skimpy, I always tend to browse Frederick’s of Hollywood for ideas. That is the place to go for skimpiness!
2. The dress was made entirely of black lace and had a bustier top. – Once again, here’s another description of the dress.
3. She turned around only to find Blu standing behind her. – I intentionally put Blu in this scene to show how easily he could get close to the Kane/ Santiago family. Despite being threatened by Jay, Blu still makes an appearance at Sapphire. Since he does, I wanted readers to see that Blu isn’t scared of Jay.
4. For the first time in his life, King was starting to realize that he wasn’t a killer. – Jay’s father, Hector Santiago, was a killer as was Jay so one would think that King would follow in their footsteps. In this book, it appears that King will not.
5. He also gave me a little something to help with the bills. You know I had a baby last year. – This line is spoken by Ms. Rosetta who is Rico’s mother. She says this to King when he comes to her house looking for Rico. While this will be something that most readers will probably not remember, the baby she is speaking of will become a main character in Book Eight of the series.
7 Day Challenge (Day Two): Monday, June 1, 2015
On My Soapbox
So one of the things that is making me nervous during this challenge is the lack of calories I’m eating. While I’m eating 3 meals a day including a snack or two, my calories weren’t hitting 1200 with the things I planned to eat. I read an article on livestrong.com regarding the dangers of eating too few calories and this is one of the side effects along with malnutrition. Also, when you don’t give your body enough food, it sometimes hangs on to every calorie because it feels like it needs it. Eating too few calories can also cause the following according to the article on LiveStrong:
- sluggish metabolism
- slower fat burning process
- dizziness
- headaches
- irritability (I’ve already feeling this due to the lack of bread, lol)
Food, Food, Food
Breakfast
1 packet of Kiggins Oatmeal- Original Flavor with 1 tbsp of Blue Bonnet Light Margarine
1 banana
2 Banquet Turkey Patties (I ate this with breakfast although I bought it to go with my grits so I could eat more calories)
Calories: 350
Lunch
4 oz of boneless skinless chicken breast
1/2 cup of collard greens
1/2 cup of Great Northern Beans
Calories: 210
Dinner
4 oz of Baked Pink Salmon Skin-On
1/2 cup of whole kernel corn
1/2 cup of green beans
Calories: 190
Snacks
1 orange
1 bag of Fritos Corn Chips (I only ate this because it was at my desk so I could increase my calorie count)
6 oz cup of Lowfat Banana Creme Pie Yogurt with 1/2 cup of Post Ohs cereal
Calories: 357
Total Calories: 1107
Exercise
2 laps around the Lake Pointe Business Park, completed in 34 minutes (this is about two miles), 100 jumping jacks
Water
Completed – 1 gallon!
Behind the Book (The Ace of Diamonds): Part III: Set It Off and Chapter Twenty-One
Part III- Set It Off- The title of this section is named Set It Off to let readers know that the drama is about to turn up a notch. There will be a little more violence and bloodshed.
Chapter Twenty-One
1. She looked in the direction in which she was pointing, and automatically clutched at her heart as she saw King emerge from the car. He was clad in a tan seersucker suit and looked more like a young businessman than a twenty year-old male who had been released from the county jail. – In this scene, King originally gets out the car and proposes to Coco. I changed my mind before I sent the book to the editor for him not to propose at this specific time. I felt it was cliche to propose at a graduation. To me, proposing on holidays, birthdays and graduations are so expected nowadays.
2. He knew Jay had come close when he saw the slash that had been made in his dress shirt. – If I’m remembering correctly, this idea came from a scene in the Princess Bride, lol. I want to say it is when Westley is dressed as the man in black and is fighting Inigo. I think one of ‘em got their shirt slashed.
3. Blu stepped into the doorway as a .22 was pointed in his direction. “Like father, like son, eh?” – I chose this gun on purpose as a reference to my sorority, which was founded in 1922. The “Like Father, like son,” line is also a subliminal reference to The Game’s song, “Like Father, Like Son.” Game is one of my favorite rappers, right behind DMX.
Behind the Book (The Ace of Diamonds): Chapter Twenty
1. If you want to fuck, get someone else. I’m not doing this shit anymore. I’m forty-seven now. I have three kids and I deserve more than a one night stand.”- This line is spoken by Jay and is a reference to Book Two, Diamonds are Forever. In this book, Carmen gets mad at Kane, and seeks revenge by sleeping with Jay. Now, in The Ace of Diamonds, she is mad at Kane again so Jay assumes she wants to do the same thing.
2. “You’re wearing a twelve million dollar necklace around your neck. It was part of a private collection in Switzerland. My friend in Africa sent it to me.” – I know the necklace described here is a real diamond necklace I found, but unfortunately I can’t locate the name of it.
12 Rare Photos of Marilyn Monroe You’ve Never Seen Before
I’ve actually seen a few of these. It’s probably due to all of the picture books I have of Marilyn Monroe.
8 Tips for Editing a Manuscript
There is a lot of great tips here!
Black Lilac Kitty Book Reviews
A writer/author should make the manuscript the best it can be before sending it to the publisher. This goes for both traditional published authors and for Indie authors.
How can you make it the best possible?
- Proofread.
- Proofread backwards. Start with the last word of the book to the front. This will help catch typos that Spell Check does not catch, such as “there” vs. “their.”
- Have someone else proofread. Another set of eyes will help catch things you may not.
- Ask Beta Readers to read your work and give you feedback.
- Try “Grammarly” at grammarly dot com. It is free and boast “Grammarly makes you a better writer by finding and correcting up to 10x more mistakes than your word processor.” Give it a try. It can’t hurt.
- If you can financially afford to do so, hire an editor.
If you cannot afford to hire an editor, read your…

Sorry, but I’m going to give you a spoiler. This sneak peek features Tyson Beckford and my fave from Empire, Jussie Smollett. I’m already loving the song so I can’t wait until the full video is released. Yes, I’m a Lamb!
7 Day Challenge (Day One): Sunday, May 31, 2015
Starting Stats

I’m still trying to figure out what could’ve happened to make me go to 206.6 this week. Last week, I weighed in at 205.8, so I gained .8 lbs somehow. I did eat a pint of Talenti Raspberry Cheesecake throughout the week, but I tried to stick to the 1/2 cup serving. It has loads of sugar (over 20g per serving) so this could be it. I also ate a lot of fried chicken because I bought a tray of fried chicken portions from Wally World. However, even with the gelato and fried chicken, I didn’t go over my total amount of allotted calories for the day. I’ve been told that things matter a whole lot more than calories when it comes to food. Sugar content, fat, all are important in addition to calories. I also walked 3-4 times out the week. Or it could be all the bad eating I did yesterday that showed up on the scale. Or maybe it is water weight, lol. I read an article on prevention.com which discusses 7 weird reasons you can be gaining weight. Here are the seven reasons:
- You’re depressed
- You’re taking the wrong Prescription Medication (some medications slow down metabolism)
- Digestive issues
- You’re missing certain nutrients
- You’re getting older
- You have plantar fasciitis- this is a musculoskeletal condition
- You have Cushing’s Syndrome- a condition caused by prolonged exposure to cortisol
Food, Food, Food
Breakfast
1 serving of cooked grits with ½ tbsp. of Blue Bonnet Light Butter
2 Turkey Patties
1 slice of Sandwich Cheese (the easiest way to make cheese grits!)
Calories: 345
Lunch
4 oz. of Baked Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast
½ cup of Great Northern Beans
½ cup of Collard Greens
Calories: 210
Dinner
4 oz of baked Pink Salmon fillet (Skin-On)
1/2 cup of cut green beans
½ cup of whole kernel corn
Calories: 190
Snacks
1 large banana (I ate this right after my morning walk while I was fixing breakfast)
1 medium size orange (This was my bedtime snack lol)
Calories: 172
Misc
1 Peppermint – 20 cals
Exercise
2.5 mile walk at Cherry Park, completed in 56 minutes.
Water
1 Gallon (Completed!)
Total Calories for the Day: 937
My calories for the day are not good at all. It’s reported that women should eat at least 1200 calories a day. I would’ve hit this if I was able to eat bread. With breakfast, I normally would have 2 pieces of toast with butter, which would probably be an additional 190 calories. I also generally eat 8-12 ounces of baked chicken, but to save money so the chicken would stretch out for the week, I cut each piece of chicken in half after weighing it. This also took off 110 calories. I also could’ve had a baked potato with dinner, but I didn’t purchase this at the grocery store and I’ve already maxed out my grocery budget. Since I ate regularly throughout the day, I wasn’t hungry at all despite the number of calories I ate.
What I Watched: Lil’ Mama “Sausage”
I’ve always liked Lil’ Mama since her Lip Gloss days. I already knew she was going to excel in the role of Left Eye for the TLC movie, CrazySexyCool so it didn’t shock me when the movie came out. Now, she’s back again with a new single, “Sausage.” I’ve heard a lot about the video on IG and blogs, but had only seen snippets. I figured I would give it a peek.
7 Day Challenge: How To Drink A Gallon of Water a Day
There are a total of 128 ounces of water in each gallon. Yes, that is a lot and yes, you will have frequent trips to the bathroom. While this particular 7 Day Challenge only requires you to drink 6 or more bottles, I’m used to drinking a gallon of water from the original 7 Day Challenge I completed.
With Breakfast, drink 32 oz.
With Mid-Morning Snack, drink 16 oz.
With Lunch, drink 32 oz.
With Afternoon Snack, drink 16 oz.
With Dinner, drink 32 oz.
*If after dinner, there is still water in the jug, which does happen on occasion, just drink it before bed 🙂
This plan can always be altered. For example, if you workout in the evening, you can drink 16 oz. after exercising, and then drink 16 oz. with dinner. This breakdown is just to give you a head start if you’re a beginner like I was last year.
7 Day Challenge: Ready, Set, Go!
Weight Struggles
Welcome to my online diary for the next seven days. If you’re a regular on social media, you’ve probably seen posts regarding the 7 Day Challenge. Is it hard? Yes. I can say this because I’ve completed the challenge before. I did it last year and lost 4.4 lbs. It is hard because you have to have willpower even when you’re in tempting situations. Imagine the temptation when you walk into an event with cake everywhere. IY YI YI!
The challenge worked for me, but here comes the sad part. I gained the weight back and then some. How did this happen? Well, several things caused this. For one, I’m greedy when it comes to sweets. I like ice cream, cupcakes, Oreo pudding cakes, cake pops, etc. and I love dining out. Put all of that with lack of exercise and you got twenty extra pounds coming at cha!
In addition, I’m an emotional eater. If I’m happy, I feel like I need to celebrate in some type of way and I reward myself with food. If I’m sad, I will literally try and eat the problem away. Once, I was upset over an issue with a friend so I went to Wally World, bought a pack of Pillsbury Chocolate Chip cookies, baked all 12 of ‘em and ate ‘em (these were the 12 BIG cookies). Yes, I ate all of the cookies, right out the oven. It was melt in my mouth chocolaty goodness. I remember sharing this story with my OBGYN and her face was like: *insert blank stare*.
Growing up, I only got on the scale a couple of times so I only remember a few of the weights I’ve been. I remember being 100 lbs., 138 lbs., 145 lbs. (I was in high school when I was 145). Then, I went to college, my parents passed, I ate, ate, ate, ate and the next weight I ended up at was 233. I had a few friends helping me to try and lose the weight, but I was stubborn and didn’t want to put in any work. I did manage to lose 12 lbs. within 4 weeks (I lost 9 lbs. at the first weigh-in, which was after 2 weeks, and then 3 lbs. at the second weigh-in) only to give up and gain it back.
Then, one day, I had a wake-up call. I needed to get my life together. I had just ended a relationship, had strayed away from the Lord, and I was fat. Yeah, I’ll say it, I was fat. I knew there had to be an easy way to get the weight off versus doing all these hard, painful exercises. Therefore, I started walking (I would walk 3 miles per hour on the treadmill, 3-4 times out the week, did a couple of walks at Riverwalk, and walked two or more laps at Cherry Park). I counted my calories with the help of two apps, Fat Secret and MyFitnessPal, and eventually advanced from walking to the elliptical, which I would do for 30-35 minutes. I lost a total of 63 lbs., reaching a weight of 170. My goal weight was 150.
Then, those old habits started creeping back in. I went all the way back up to 202 lbs. after a fun trip to Orlando, Florida last June. I got my act together, started walking, did the 7 Day Challenge and got back down to 186 lbs. for a photo-shoot in September. I maintained that same weight until October and then after that, the holidays hit, and it was downhill all over again. Now, I’m trying to lose the weight again.
The Plan
At the end of each day starting on Sunday, I will be publishing a blog post of my meals for the day, calories per meal, and total calories for the day. I will also include the exercise I did along with any other tidbits.
The Goal
My goal for this challenge is to simply lose and not gain. I’m using this challenge to jump start my weight loss. There is not a set number I’m looking to lose at the end of this challenge. I simply need to lose. I will say that my goal is to lose 10 lbs. by June 27th for my soror’s wedding. Once that is complete, I will then head towards my ultimate goal of getting back to 170 and then to my stretch goal of 150.
The Disclaimer
In no way, shape or form, do I have the answers to weight loss. I also am not trying to be a fitness expert or nutritionist. Believe me. I do not have this desire. I simply am a woman who decided to put her struggles out there on the forefront to gain support and encouragement so I will be faithful on the challenge. I felt that if I had people watching, it would make me more determined to stick to the rules and not cheat, lol. Hopefully, it can encourage you to do the 7 Day Challenge as well if you need to lose a few pounds.
What I Watched: Jazmine Sullivan “Forever Don’t Last”
So a friend suggested I give this song a listen. I liked the lyrics at first listen and we all know Jazmine’s voice is fire. I can see this becoming a fave. Check out the visual:
Behind the Book (The Ace of Diamonds): Chapter Nineteen
Chapter Nineteen
1. Kristian and Akaila had headed to Club Monaco, which was about four stores down from where Carmen was. – I was looking up different clothing stores for this scene since Carmen, Kristian and Akaila were going to be at the mall and found this store. The clothes appeared to be something I felt I would find in Seventeen so I included the store in this scene.
2. Once I find out who it is, I’m putting twenty thousand on his head. – This line is spoken by Blu and was inspired by a YouTube video I saw where T.I. was performing. If I’m remembering correctly, someone was throwing things on stage and T.I. responds with placing a $50000 bounty on the person’s head if they continued.
Update: Peep the video of T.I. below:
Behind the Book (The Ace of Diamonds): Chapter Eighteen
Chapter Eighteen
1. “I’ve gotten like a hundred Google Alerts already. – I will be honest and say that I didn’t know anything about Google Alerts until I was watching an episode of one of Lala’s Full Court Life. Or maybe it was Lala’s Full Court Wedding. Hmm…well, in the episode, something was going on, which was attracting a lot of media attention thus causing Lala to get Google Alerts on her phone. Due to Carmen being a celebrity, I figured with something like a paternity trial going on, she should have hundreds of Google Alerts as well. In this scene though, Kane is the one who brings up the Google Alerts.
